Our 50th Anniversary Celebration Dinner
1974-2024

On a pleasant evening in October we gathered at the Oriel Hotel in St Asaph to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Denbigh and District Probus Club. Club members and their guests enjoyed a delicious meal and an evening of magic, music and comedy from Paul Ray B.E.M. who was assisted by his wife Jane.

Club President, Graham Evans welcomed everyone to the evening and introduced our guests, the Chair and past Chair of Rhyl Probus Club, Jean and Keith Cojeen. Jean was kind enough to say a few words of congratulation to Denbigh Probus Club and presented the Club with a certificate from Probus Global, recognizing our 50 years.

Two celebration cakes had been organized, by Fay and Michael Corfe, who did the honours by ceremonially cutting the cake on our behalf. One cake was decorated with a message in English and the other in the Welsh language. Grace was offered by the Reverend Bernard Thomas and the meal was then served. During the meal tables were entertained to some close up magic by Paul Ray.

Julia Hughes took to the microphone after the meal to tell us briefly about some personal experiences members had written to her about. They were anonymous but will give us food for thought at our future meetings trying to find out who did what. Some had met famous people, others had experiences of far flung corners of the world.

The entertainment began with some fascinating slight of hand involving playing cards and ropes, but the audience gasped when one “volunteer” had a sharp sword thrust through her neck, with no apparent ill effects though she was advised not to drink for half an hour afterwards !

During the interval we were all treated to a slice of the celebration cake with tea or coffee. The President mentioned a little about the history of the club, which was comprehensively covered in a booklet, printed by Steve Tootell, which everyone got with their programme. The history had been compiled by John Peel and Keith Lester, both former chairmen. Then our Vice President, Dewi Owen M.B.E. proposed the loyal toast to King Charles.
